Software piracy level down by 8% in Azerbaijan.

Protection and observance of copyrights has strengthened in Azerbaijan in the last few years.  As a result of activities jointly implemented by the Copyright Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan and other public bodies the level of piracy in the book publishing and audio-video products market declined by 20%, and the level of piracy in the software market declined by 8% in 2011 in comparison with 2005.

According to information provided to ‘ICTnews’ by the  Copyright Agency,  a new law on ‘Protection of intellectual property and fighting piracy’ is expected to be adopted  in Azerbaijan as part of the implementation of the ‘TRIPS’ agreement signed with the World Trade Organization.

Adoption of this law marks a new stage in the fighting against piracy. After the law comes into force all copies of legally created copyright objects, including computer programs, audiovisual materials and phonograms, will be marked with special check numbers.  Copies of copyright objects without attached check numbers will be considered pirate copies, and their commercial distribution will be banned.
