Scottish government awards £2.2m smartcard contract to Novacard

The Scottish government has awarded German company Novacard a £2.2m contract to supply three million smartcards over the next four years to local authorities.

The Scottish public sector has implemented a National Entitlement Card (NEC) scheme, which allows Scottish citizens to have a multi-application smartcard as a means of accessing public services.
According to an online award notice, Novacard has been chosen to supply the Scottish government with the smartcards for this service, following a successful tender process.

The Scottish government sponsors the NEC scheme, and Dundee City Council delivers a managed service to support council users, developments in the scheme and manage third-party contractors.

The cards are intended to be used for major services, such as Transport Scotland, which provides free or concessionary travel to more than a million Scottish citizens and local government services that include school catering, library and leisure services.

Novacard will issue 1.7 million cards initially, with an additional 1.3 million expected to be supplied before December 2016.
