18,000 computers sold within ‘People’s Computer’ project

The number of computers sold within the ‘People’s Computer’ project has hit 18,096 units. This information was provided to ‘ICTnews’ by the ‘BestComp Group’ company. According to BestComp Group, most of the computers, 2,866 pcs, have been sold in Baku.

1,705 computers have been sold in Nakhichevan AR, 810 – in Ganja region, 688 – in Salyan region, 614 – in Shirvan region, 613 – in Sabirabad region, 602 – in Kurdamir region, 559 - in Neftchala region, and 499 – in Guba region.  In total, 17,976 people have bought computers. Of them 11,173 were women, and 6,803 were men.

The number of sold computers exceeds the number of buyers by 120 units. This difference took place because some buyers taking an advantage from the discount, offered by the project, purchased the second computer after they had finished making payments for the first one.  Around 96% of computers were bought by teachers, and  4% - by students, pupils and medical workers.

Over 90% of sold computers were portative devises.  Let’s note that that the ‘People’s Computer’ project aims at providing different social layers of the population with modern computers and licensed software, eliminating the ‘digital inequality’ through expanding the application of information and communication technologies in the regions, supporting the activities conducted by the Azerbaijan Government in order to develop the e-Government. Under the project’s conditions, members of families with teachers and pupils of compulsory schools,  teachers and students of universities and colleges, civil servants and medical workers may purchase computers with interest-free 12 month loan for the prices that are 24-40% lower than market prices.

This project, initiated by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies and the Ministry of Education, is being jointly implemented by the ‘Microsoft’ and ‘HP’ companies.  The ‘BestComp Group’ company is responsible for the shipment of computers.  The ‘Azercell’ and ‘Azerfon’ mobile communication operators are also taking part in the implementation of the project. The ‘Azerpoct’ LLC is responsible for delivery of computers and collection of payments.
