SAMSUNG mass-produces second-generation 14-nanometer FinFET technology


Samsung has made it known that mass production of its advanced logic chips has started; this chip uses Samsung’s 14nm LPP methodology which is part of its second-generation’s FinFET technology. The 14nm LPP stands for Low-Power Plus.
 
In the buildup process to the mass production of the advanced FinFET logic technology, Samsung disclosed in the first quarter of 2015 that it was releasing its Exynos 7 Octa processor which was designed based on the company’s initial 14nm LPE (Low-Power Early) technology.
 
Considering its latest 14nm LPP process, Samsung shows its Exynos 8 Octa processor is efficient in power use and excellent performance. Qualcomm Technologies is among Samsung’s customers and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor is built on Samsung’s latest 14nm LPP process.
 
Samsung was able to create efficient energy use for the chip and greatly increase its performance by integrating 3D FinFET technology on the transistors. To this extent, the new 14nm LPP process produces about 15% more speed and utilizes 15% less power than the initial 14nm LPE process due to the modifications made in the transistor structure and process optimization.
 
Meanwhile, Samsung was able to remove all scaling limitations in the chip by using fully-depleted FinFET transistors so as to boost performance.
 
The new 14nm FinFET is regarded to be among the best optimized solutions for IoT and mobile technologies, and Samsung thinks the product will be highly beneficial communication industries, electronic companies, and even the automotive sector by boosting energy efficiency and high performance capabilities.
