YouTube gets real with live 360-degree videos and immersive audio

YouTube has just announced the introduction of 360-degree live videos, meaning that from now on you will be able to explore a stream from all angles. The new feature is sure to completely immerse viewers in the content they are browsing. The first videos to feature such content will be the Coachella music festival live stream. Additionally, YouTube is also implementing support for on-demand videos.

In order to watch such virtual reality videos, you can do so on either your desktop browser or on another device like a smartphone or a tablet. If the streamers use the right camera, they will be able to generate 1440p videos running at sixty frames per second. The immersive process is also sustained by spatial audio, which allows users to actually feel like they are in the place where the video is shot. Surround sound has various intensities, depths, and distances which adapt automatically to the video content.

The advancement of technology has made virtual reality and 360-degree content extremely popular, and thus all tech giants are making efforts of implementing them. Facebook has already introduced live streams and 360-degree content and is now competing in the video market with YouTube, which is currently the king in the field.

According to chief product officer Neal Mohan for YouTube, the new feature is “a stream you can explore in 360 degrees”. The announcement of the Google-owned online platform was released just a week after Facebook has revealed its 360-degree video camera and its future plans for live-streaming. Even though both companies are eyeing immersive entertainment, they have decided to take different approaches.

YouTube has previously stated that Google has a special way of tackling virtual reality, as it gives users the possibility of accessing such technology without having to buy expensive gear. Jamie Pallot, co-founder of VR firm Emblematic Group, is of the opinion that 360-degree videos can make viewers feel present at the event, in spite of not being the most immersive type of virtual reality.

The announcement of the Google-owned company has come one year after the introduction of 360-degree content. The move follows the plan of YouTube of focusing on live streaming, which is one of the most attractive features of the online realm at the moment.
