The SmartSlab dining table can cook food, chill drinks and charge your phone

Dining tables are hot spots in the home. They’re used for eating meals, gathering friends and family together, and, at times, even as makeshift desks.

While any regular dining table will cater for these activities, there’s a new innovation in the works that’s taking things to a different level.

The ‘SmartSlab‘ table, designed by Kram/Weisshaar, may look ordinary at first glance, but hidden inside its razor-thin tabletop is the capability to cook and/or warm plates of food while simultaneously chilling beverages only centimetres away.

Its features include circular heating elements positioned beneath guests’ plates, keeping them at a precise 42.5 degrees. Meanwhile, cooling elements are strategically placed along the table to keep champagne bottles chilled to -5 degrees. Induction rings also act as a hub for cooking. This would be particularly handy at dinner parties, allowing the cook to continue their culinary duties without having to leave the table.

What’s more, discreet digital devices have been embedded into the design, including wireless charging modules, touch-control panels and Wi-Fi base stations. (Not ideal for those attempting to enforce ‘screen free’ meal times).

The tabletop is made of a special ceramic tile, SapienStone, a virtually indestructible material impervious to fire, frost, thermal shock, scratches and microbes. (In other words, it’s resilient enough to survive any drunken antics after a few too many glasses of chilled wine).
