The global smartphone market grew by 1%

The International Data Corporation (IDC) has released its data for the worldwide smartphone shipments during the Q3 2016 period. And as per the data, Samsung continues to dominate worldwide shipments of smartphones despite the Galaxy Note 7 recall. This is definitely a good news for the South Korean giant who has been receiving flak for the explosion incidents as well as for their continuation even after it released "safe" units and recalled the faulty ones.

In midst of all the Galaxy Note 7 recall saga and bad press, Samsung managed to ship 72.5 million smartphones in Q3 2016. It is indeed a fall of 13.5% when compared with Q3 15 but it turned out to be good enough number for maintaining the lead. The main reason for the lead is said to be the continuous success of Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. Another good thing for Samsung is that these shipment figures do not include recalled and unsold Galaxy Note 7 units which is another sign of its dominance in the smartphone market. Earlier today, it released its Q3 16 earnings where it reported 30% less profit than its expectations.

The second spot in the list is still held by Apple as it shipped 45.5 million units this quarter, a drop of 5.3% from the previous year. Between the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the latter one is said to be in such a huge demand that it went over the supply. Apple is expected to see positive effects of this demand in the fourth quarter results.

The remaining three spots in the top five were captured by Chinese smartphone brands Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo. These brands ended up shipping 33.6, 25.3, and 21.2 million units. Huawei's current market shipment share is at 9.3% and it would be expecting to reach double figures in next one or two quarters. Interesting, all these three Chinese brands saw a growth in the shipments of their smartphones during this quarter as opposite to Apple and Samsung which had to suffer decline.

As for the global smartphone shipments data, there is a growth of 1% which means 362.9 million units this year as compared to 359.3 million units last year. It is good to know that the Galaxy Note 7 issue did not affect the worldwide shipments drastically.
