ITU launches headquarters architecture competition

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) said it has unveiled an architecture competition for the design of its new electronically-controlled headquarters building in Geneva, Switzerland.

According to a statement by ITU on Saturday in Lagos, the competition for the design of a new smart headquarters building was a decision by ITU Council.

It said that as the United Nations’ specialized agency for Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), it had been headquartered at its Place des Nations site in Geneva since 1962.

“This project will deliver a smart sustainable headquarters building integrated into the local environment.

“With this project, ITU reinforces its commitment to serving its member states, private sector members and associates and academia from a location at the heart of international organizations’ activity in Geneva.

“The new headquarters will provide a forum for physical and virtual meetings via accessible, state-of-the-art conference facilities.

“The architecture competition is open to all professional architects duly registered in any of ITU’s 193 member states.

“It will be held in two rounds and applications are to be submitted anonymously to the Jury, guided by the Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects (SIA), norm SIA-142,’’ ITU said.

The union said that those wishing to compete could find initial information at ITU’s website and might sign up at the Swiss public procurement platform, where they could find more information on the project and the invitation to tender.

ITU said that those wishing to compete should follow the instructions to register for the competition by post only before May 5, 2017.
