Nokia 8 Pro, Nokia 9 with Snapdragon 845 expected in second half of 2018

MD Global had an impressive start last year after it brought back Nokia with a bunch of smartphones. The company continued its steady pace by unveiling a set of new phones at MWC 2018 last month which included the Nokia 8110 4G banana feature phone, Nokia 1 Android Go smartphone, Nokia 6 (2018), Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 8 Sirocco. The last one is the company's flagship smartphone right now, but that is not the going to be the case for the rest of the year.

The Nokia 8 Sirocco is what rumors last year suggested the Nokia 9 would be. Nevertheless, HMD is still planning to launch the Nokia 9 and the Nokia 8 Pro as later this year, and they are set to be the company's main flagships for 2018. Here's why that is the case - the Nokia 8 Sirocco comes with an attractive 5.5-inch 1440x2560 display with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It also comes with updated camera specs which include a dual rear camera setup with a 12-megapixel primary sensor with an f/1.75 aperture and a 13-megapixel secondary telephoto sensor with an f/2.6 aperture. All of this combined with a stock Android Oreo software makes for an impressive high-end smartphone. However, the Nokia 8 Sirocco is powered by last year’s Snapdragon 835 chipset, which is why this falls just short of flagship status in 2018.

HMD is keeping the second half of the year, particularly sometime in August, to launch the Nokia 8 Pro which will be the company's main 2018 flagship, or at least one of them. The Nokia 8 Pro will be powered by the latest Snapdragon 845 SoC along with top-of-the-line hardware that could be similar to the Nokia 8 Sirocco, as per a report. The report adds that apart from the Nokia 8 Pro, HMD will also announce the Nokia 9 - the other major flagship smartphone of 2018.

The Nokia 9 will also come with a Snapdragon 845 chipset and is expected to pack upgrades to the camera, design and some other breakthrough innovations. You may have heard rumors about a Nokia smartphone with a penta-lens setup. While this was earlier tipped to feature on the Nokia 8 Pro, the latest report now claims that the Nokia 9 could come with five cameras on the back. The Nokia 9 will also likely come with a larger full-screen display and may include an in-display fingerprint sensor - so far seen on the Vivo X20 Plus UD.

Not much else is known about the two upcoming Nokia flagships as of now, but the report does add that the Nokia 9 could be priced higher than the Nokia 8 Pro. These phones will be more in line to take on other flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S9. The Nokia 8 Pro could be launched sometime in August while the Nokia 9 will likely see an unveiling near the end of the year.
