Google Play Music to be replaced by YouTube Remix

With the introduction of YouTube Remix, Google is looking to reshuffle the way it streams digital music content. This could mean the end of Google Play Music, which is Google’s current default music player and online music streaming service which competes with the Amazon Prime Music, Apple Music, Gaana, Saavn, Spotify, and others. Except Spotify, most music streaming services are available in India.

Currently, there is a lot confusion surrounding music streaming services from Google as it has Google Play music for audio streaming, while music videos and movies are offered through YouTube and Google Play Movies. One can purchase either a Google Play subscription or a YouTube Red subscription to stream music, and there’s an overlap of services. Now, Google will start viewing YouTube Remix as the perfect fit to end all the streaming confusion.

While there have been several rumours surrounding YouTube Remix and it’s development, the latest news comes through a report from DroidLife, a website dedicated to developments in the Android world, which speculated that the new service will be rolled out by the end of this year. A spokesperson from YouTube confirmed that the development of YouTube Remix is currently in the works and that the company has already started signing deals with record labels from end of last year.

Since there is no official word from Google on the details of this new service, there are a lot of loose ends that need to be tied by the company, as anxious users of Google Play Music would like to know if their subscriptions would be abruptly cancelled or if they would be provided a transfer to YouTube Remix. It is also unclear if saved playlists, favorite songs and other data from Google Play Music will be ported to YouTube Remix.

The new music streaming services developed by Google are said to be an effort to play catch up to Apple Music and Spotify, both of whom have significantly higher number of users. Google’s annual developer conference Google I/O is scheduled to be conducted between 8th and 10th of May, 2018 and we may be hearing more about the new streaming services during this event.
