Azerbaijan represented at ITU’s Plenipotentiary Conference


The Plenipotentiary Conference of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) began its work in Dubai (United Arab Emirates). The opening ceremony of the conference was attended by Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Director General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of the United Arab Emirates Hamad Obaid  Al Mansoori, ITU Secretary General Houlin Zhao, heads of relevant ministries of the Union’s member states and other officials.
 
Azerbaijan is represented at the event by an official delegation led by Deputy Minister of Transport, Communications and High Technologies Elmir Velizade. Minister of Transport, Communications and High Technologies Ramin Guluzade will deliver a speech at the plenary session of the Union on October 31.
 
ITU Secretary-General Houlin Zhao, in his speech, noted that 3.9 billion people around the world are still not connected to the Internet. Therefore, the conference will take stock of the progress that has been made towards achieving the Connect 2020 Agenda, in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. According to him, ITU encourages the creation of equal conditions for the public, private sector and civil society among member states, ensuring the development of the ICT sector, achieving goals in a short time, and creating gender balance in the relevant field.
 
It should be noted that the plenipotentiary conference is the highest policy-making body of the ITU. It is ITU’s highest-level meeting, where its 193 Member States agree on the Union’s overall strategic and financial plans, leadership and direction for the next 4 years.
 
At the conference, ITU Member States will set out a roadmap on information and communication technologies for 2020-2023.
 
Besides, the 48 Member States amongst them will be elected to the next ITU Council, the governing body of the Union during the four-year period separating Plenipotentiary Conferences.
 
Elections will also be held for the management team of the Union, including the next Secretary-General, Deputy Secretary- General, Directors of the Radiocommunication, Telecommunication, Standardization and Telecommunication Development Sectors.
 
It will be recalled that Azerbaijan has been a member of ITU since 1992, was elected to the Council in 2014 and has actively participated in its activities during this period.
