Peyk plant starts digital TV decoder production


The PEYK plant under the Ministry of Defence Industry of Azerbaijan will start producing digital DVB-T-tuners (to receive digital TV signals), PEYK told. Production capacity of the plant will depend directly on consumer demand.

The tuners will be sold through retail outlets and the devices will be brought on to the market under the DVB-T PEYK brand at a cost not exceeding 30 manat.

The decoders will support MPEG -2 and MPEG -4 standards. Accessories for digital decoders were purchased from Taiwan and demand is anticipated to reach 1.5 million units in the domestic market, PEYK said.

The development of digital broadcasting in Azerbaijan is one of the priority tasks of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies. It intends to distribute digital broadcasting throughout the country soon.

According to the ministry, all areas in Azerbaijan will be covered by digital broadcasting standard by late 2012. According to the working plan, it is expected to fully pass over to digital broadcasting in 2013.
