“The speed of the broadband internet in Azerbaijan is as high as in the Great Britain,” told ICTnews.az Richard Shirer, the chief executive officer at “Bakcell” mobile communications operator.
According to him, by the end of 2012, Baksell’s subscriber database had grown by 15 percent. Bakcell accounts for 40 percent of the mobile internet market. Over 2,000 base stations have been put into operation at Bakcell’s network. Presently, the company’s network covers more than 99 percent of the population and 92 percent of the territory of the Republic.
The network has now over 2.6 million active subscribers. Around 3 million subscriber numbers have been registered at the network so far. In addition to that, Bakcell is currently conducting negotiation with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies in order to put into operation its “4G” network and MNP service. The two services are expected to be launched this year.
It should be noted that during his recent visit to Baku, the famous Hollywood producer, author of blockbuster “Resident Evil” Pol V.S.Anderson, presented a commercial, which he had shot on Bakcell’s order. The commercial was filmed in cooperation with Bakcell’s partner, Manchester United football team.
