The Haryana government has decided to introduce biometric fingerprint scanners in around 2,622 government schools across the State in an effort to keep a check on teachers and deal with increasing absenteeism project, to be completed by August, is being implemented under the centrally sponsored scheme for information and communication technology in schools. The immediate trigger, however, were the many incidents coming to light where teachers, especially those posted in rural areas, coming to school only once in a while to mark their attendance in the register.
The teachers would be required to mark their presence both when coming in and leaving the school premises. This way, they would be forced to spend the duty hours inside the school. The scanner would read the fingerprints of each teacher and nobody else would be able to replicate them.
The Education Department has already tested the functioning of the system at a school in Raipur Rani in Panchkula district and would now introduce it across the State. Even the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is introducing the system of biometric attendance in its primary schools from July to ensure transparency and curb absenteeism.
