Google announces Android Oreo

Android 8.0 is now official as Android Oreo. Earlier, the operating system was known as Android O. On Monday night, Google announced the name of its latest version of Android through a "live stream" and a short clip that first showed the O in Android O as the solar eclipse before the animation changed it into the Oreo. Pretty clever, considering that last night was also the moment of solar eclipse in the US.Google said that the Oreo will be rolled out to compatible phones with update 8.0, starting with the Google's own Pixel phones.

By Monday morning, the Oreo update was rolling out to people who had earlier installed the beta version of Android O. It was also reaching Pixel and Pixel users who were until now using the Android Nougat, although this rollout is in waves so some users may get it early while some may have to wait for a few days.

Google said that as far as its own devices were concerned, the Android O will be available for Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus Player, Google Pixel C, Google Pixel and the Google Pixel XL. The company adds that all the devices enrolled in the beta program will automatically get the Android Oreo update.

Ahead of the Android Oreo official reveal, as it has been the case with new Android releases, there was a lot of speculation around the name of Android 8. Some reports said that it might name it Octopus -- largely because a floating octopus was included in the Android O beta by Google as a sort of Easter egg --  while some said it will either be called Android Oreo or Oatmeal Cookie. It turns out the name is Oreo. Why Oreo? This is because Google says that it (Android Oreo) is as sweet as the "world's favorite cookie" Oreo. Explaining the new Android Oreo, Google says that it is, "smarter, faster, more powerful and sweeter than ever."

The Android Oreo comes with a range of new features, including the key ones like picture-in-picture and autofill. Alongside these features, Android Oreo also brings along stronger security protections and speed improvements which are said to "keep you safe and moving at light speed". Google says, "When you're on your next adventure, Android Oreo is the superhero to have by your side (or in your pocket!)." Let's take a quick look at the new Android 8.0 Oreo software version.

With the picture-in-picture feature, Android Oreo will allow users to have open two apps on the screen at the same time. For instance, it will allow you to check your schedule while you're on a video call. The new software will also come with improvements in the notification panel.  Android Oreo notification dots allow users to see what's new in their apps, like the important ones the user puts on their home screen, and then accordingly take action on those notifications quickly.

Android Oreo is said to be the most secure version of Android so far. In case cyber criminals are trying to get bad software onto your device, the new Android version will shield the phone. "Android Oreo is more secure with Google Play Protect built in, security status front and center in settings, and tighter app installs controls," notes Google. Alongside being secure, Android O helps minimize unintentional overuse of battery from apps in the background. This saves a lot of battery.

Android Oreo will make your device faster than ever and boost speed. It comes with autofill feature that remembers things like logins, passwords -- with user's permission of course. This allows users to sign in easily. Google claims that it boosts speed up to "twice as fast on Pixel." Furthermore, the new software also comes with support for Android Instant Apps which allow users to directly teleport directly into new apps with no installations. Additionally, Android Oreo also brings along several news and fully-redesigned emojis.

"We're pushing the sources to Android Open Source Project (AOSP) for everyone to access today. Pixel and Nexus 5X/6P builds have entered carrier testing, and we expect to start rolling out in phases soon, alongside Pixel C and Nexus Player," says Google. The California major further says that it has been working closely with several companies like Essential, General Mobile, HMD Global Home of Nokia Phones, Huawei, HTC, Kyocera, LG, Motorola, Samsung, Sharp, and Sony. The company also highlights that several devices by these companies will be upgraded the latest software version Android 8.0 Oreo. Google further notes, "Any devices enrolled in the Android Beta Program will also receive this final version."

To recall, OnePlus CEO long ago confirmed that last year's flagship phones by the company - OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T will be upgraded to Android O software. However, the company has also confirmed that Android Oreo will be the last software update that both the phones will be getting. There's still no confirmation if OnePlus 5 will also be upgraded to the latest software update or not. Further, HMD Global has also confirmed that the Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6 will be upgraded to Android O. There are talks that Nokia 8 can also be upgraded to the latest software.

Meahwhile, to all the users who own an Android Oreo compatible device can head over to the Android Developer website to manually download the system images for compatible devices.
