Intel unveils Xeon Platinum CPU with up to 56 cores

Intel’s latest Salvo for enterprise high-end servers is a scaleable “Cascade Lake” processor that goes up to 56 cores and 112 threads. The line-up starts with the Platinum 8200 series with up to 28 cores and 56 threads and goes all the way up to a Platinum 9200 processor with 56 cores and 112 threads.

These new processors also have a higher memory frequency with support for DDR4 2933MHz system memory and a total of 4.5TB of Optane persistent memory (PMEM) per socket. Intel says there can be up to 36TB of system-level memory in an 8-socket system combined with traditional DRAM.

The range starts with a Xeon Platinum 8276L Processor with 28 cores and a base clock of 2.20 GHz. It has a Max Turbo frequency of 4.00 GHz. The 8276M has the same specifications. The Platinum 8280 processor has a higher base clock of 2.70 GHz with the same number of cores and turbo boost. The 8280L and 8280M have the same specifications as the 8280. The Platinum 9242 processor has 48 cores with a base clock of 2.30 GHz and a turbo boost of 3.80 GHz. Finally, the 9282 processor has 56 cores with a base clock of 2.60 GHz and turbo boost of 3.80 GHz.

Intel says the new line will have support for Optane storage and hardware-based protection against Spectre and Meltdown attacks.
