MD Global is looking to offer a one centralised location to store user data of Nokia users. In a bid to make users feel more secure about their data, the company has announced that it is partnering with Google Cloud and CGI consulting firm to store data on servers in Finland instead of storing them in China or the US.
In a press release, HMD Global said that it plans to move user data like phone activation and mobile performance data to the Google Cloud Platform on Finnish servers in Hamina, Finland. HMD wants to move usage data and certain other data that the company collects to optimise user experience from Google server's in other regions around the world to the Finnish data center.
"Google Cloud and CGI were natural choices to be our strategic cloud partners thanks to our pre-existing close collaborations with them, which ensures that we're implementing our leading data security and analytics technology at a global level. We want to remain open and transparent about how we collect and store device activation data and want to ensure people understand why and how it improves their phone experience," Juho Sarvikas, chief product officer at HMD Global, said in a statement.
HMD Global will begin storing data in Finland starting with the Nokia 2.2, Nokia 3.2 and Nokia 4.2, all of which are newly launched phones. Meanwhile, data from older models will be stored in Finland after they have been updated to Android Q. The company expects all data to have moved to Finland by the end of 2020.
Interestingly, this move comes a few months after reports surfaced that some Nokia 7 Plus units were sending data that included location information and serial numbers to servers in China. HMD Global's decision to move all data to Finland could be in response to this news. HMD is promising to be more open and transparent about the data being stored, but the company has not clearly detailed the kind of data it is storing. Nevertheless, the fact that all data is now moving to a centralised location rather them multiple areas should make Nokia users feel more confident about their personal data.
